Foam roller: what is it?

The foam roller, or massage roller, is a cylindrical fitness accessory used to perform self-massage using your own body weight.

Made of plastic, it can be more or less long, and more or less thick, with more or less wide and rigid reliefs. Some are also equipped with the so-called floating points, that is, proprioceptive buttons that put more stress on the painful areas, for example the cervical.

Widely used by athletes, both pre and post training, the foam roller serves toĀ  ease tensions,Ā  speed up recovery after trainingĀ  intense and prevent muscle injuries.

However, this is not an exclusive for athletes, everyone can use it. Self-massage with the roller improves blood circulation and can prevent cellulite.

Foam roller: what is it for?

Muscle recovery is a fundamental phaseĀ  in a training program, and as such it has its importance. It is useful to help the body to regenerate itself and become increasingly more efficient. In general, this phase is carried out through the stretching, but the foam roller is a fairly new accessory that allows you to perform a self-massage that helps the athlete recover after an intense training session.

The treatment performed with the foam roller, in fact, serves to:

  • relax your muscles
  • reduce muscle pain
  • make muscles more elastic
  • improve the healing of very small tears that occur in muscle fibres following exercise
  • stimulate blood circulation
  • promote the elimination of toxins

In order to massage the various parts of the body, you need to learn a little technique to master the different postures. This requires maximum control and a good knowledge of your body.

Here are some tips for using the foam roller correctly:

  • use the roller on the floor or on a table
  • work on one muscle group at a time
  • place it in the middle of the muscle so that both the agonist and antagonist muscles work
  • perform a vertical ā€œback and forthā€ movement on the body part to be treated
  • make very small movements, that is, massage small portions of muscle at a time
  • seek relaxation
  • avoid joints
  • Once you have identified the most painful and tense point, insist several times
