Lipedema: How percussive therapy helps

Lipedema: What is it?

Lipedema is an under-recognised condition affecting approximately 11% of the population, predominantly women. It is often confused with obesity or cellulite, but it is a distinct, complex condition.

However, treating lipedema in the aesthetic field, or with restrictive diets, does not bring any benefit: it is a complex pathology, with a hereditary-genetic component.

Causes of Lipedema

The cause of lipedema remains unknown, but its tendency to run in families suggests that genetic factors may be involved. Furthermore, symptoms usually appear during phases of significant hormonal changes, such as puberty or menopause. The diagnosis is clinical, that is, it is mainly based on the observation of the symptoms.  So, the available literature allows us to hypothesize that both hormonal and genetic factors may be involved.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear during phases of significant hormonal changes, such as puberty or menopause.

  • Deposits  of abnormal fat in both legs, from the hips to the ankles (the involvement of the arms is rarer):
  • Easy bruising;
  • pain on tissue pressure, both at rest and in motion;
  • Loose skin, which loses tone;
  • Tingling;
  • spontaneous haematomas and bruising;

How does lipedema manifest itself?

Lipedema is a progressive, chronic and disabling disease. It is characterized, as mentioned above, by an abnormal accumulation of subcutaneous fat, with a probably genetic origin.

Fat accumulation is bilateral and symmetrical and is mainly located in:

  • buttocks;
  • flanks;
  • lower limbs (excluding feet).

How is lipedema treated?

Although there is still no definitive cure for the problem of lipedema, there are several treatments that help to significantly reduce the symptoms.

Treatment for lipedema is therefore multidisciplinary and includes:

  • Healthy and balanced nutritional approach
  • Physiotherapy and light exercise: help reduce fluid accumulation, increase mobility and maintain or improve leg function
  • Surgical treatment: multiple and targeted liposuctions in order to remove the adipose mass and thus reduce the pressure on the lymphatic vascular bed to slow down or eliminate the onset of further complications

So, how to treat lipedema? Percussive therapy is presented here as an addition to the treatment pathway described above.

In fact, equipping yourself with a massage gun allows you to perform at home and without any effort very deep massages that stimulate circulation and blood flow. An excellent answer to combat lipedema.

Stimulation of blood flow is one of the strengths of the percussion therapy. As in the case of anti-cellulite treatment, the intense pulsations of the massage guns cause an increase in blood flow with effects on the circulatory system and adipose tissue. This targets circulation, which plays a key role in managing the progression of lipedema.

Deep massage: With massage guns, you can effortlessly perform much more intense and deep massages than those performed manually. In this way, you treat excess adipose tissue.

Detoxifying and draining: The pulsations of the massage guns stimulate the lymphatic system, causing the expulsion of toxins and the drainage of excess fluids. A measure useful for preventing the formation of edema and stimulating blood flow.
